When you need roofing work of a high quality it can often be difficult to decide which local roofing companies have the skill, talent, expertise and reliability that you need to get your project completed affordably and on time. You may be looking for a roofer in Norwich and there will probably be dozens of roofing contractors in your local area, each one claiming to be better than their competitor, but there are certain signs you need to look out for when choosing the right one for your roofing job.
Check online profiles
When searching online you can check roofing contractors websites for information about them and the work they do. There are also comparison websites that allow you to search across multiple roofing contractors in one place. Some platforms only allow the best professionals from diverse sectors onto their site, so you know when you go on there to find a local roofer they’ve already been pre-vetted to a certain extent. By looking on a roofing contractors profile you’ll be able to gather everything you need to know about them. Some roofers specialise in different types of roofing as you can get specialists in flat roofing and others that only work on new pitched roofing.
Previous customer reviews are perhaps the best way to gain an accurate perspective on a roofing company or individual contractor, as they will give a review reflecting the experience they had, and not just on the quality and price of the work, but also how friendly, honest and personable they were. They also might post pictures of the job so you can see the quality of the roofing work.
The platforms go the extra mile when it comes to conducting background checks on their members, as well as letting them post and verify their various accreditations to show their skill in the respective sector. The online profiles are legitimate unlike finding a number on a noticeboard, and it saves you the time and hassle of searching lots of different websites.
When you find one you like the look of from their huge directory, simply get in touch with them, let them know an overview of the work that needs to be carried out, and they will get back to you to discuss the project further and provide an accurate quote.

How much do roofing contractors charge?
The estimated cost of a roofing contractor can vary as there are multiple factors such as the experience and skill of the contractor, but also on the many aspects of the scope of the project.
Here is a guide to the average pricing of some regular roofing tasks priced per square metre.
Roof repair: £100-£150
Roof installation: £90-£120
Roof re-felting: £50
Slate Roof: £160-£200
Green Roof: £130
Roof shingles: Approx £70 (slate)
To replace an entire roof it can be more expensive as is a large job but the quote includes labour, materials, scaffolding, waste removal, for 20 vents on the eaves you’re looking at around £300, and if you need your roof inspected to determine the cause of the issues it’s going to be in the region of £250. There are also other roofing services available like roof cleaning that usually costs around £8 per square metre.
If you have a larger roofing task such as on a detached property or a commercial building, replacing an old roof can range depending on the complexity. Always seek multiple quotes from different contractors, but remember the cheapest option isn’t always your best choice as a poor build quality will cost you more in the future.
Look specifically for five things:
- They’re an approved Checkatrade contractor
- They hold memberships of various organisations in their sector
- They have honest reviews from real previous customers
- They have a license from NFRC which can be checked online
- They are fully insured for all work including liability insurance
How long does it take for a new roof to be installed?
As always it will depend wholly on the size of your roof and how much work and materials need to be used, but on average it can take 2-3 days for a small semi-detached roof to be installed, and for larger roofs which have dormers and gables it can take anywhere from 3-5 days.
If more structural work is needed to remove and rebuild the roof, it can take around 1-2 weeks to complete.
How many tiles will be needed per m²?
The number of tiles you’ll need depend on the size of tile and the size of the area which needs to be covered. For a standard tile like the many styles of concrete ones expect to use around 60 per m², clay tiles which are slightly larger need 45 per m², but if you use smaller slate tiles expect to use at least 100 per m². For a semi-detached property a roof is around 70m², and an average detached home is slightly larger at 100m².
